August 2013 Alaska Fishing Reports

Thursday August 1, 2013

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, 3 of whom each caught 2 silver salmon, and 1 of whom caught a chum salmon.  All of the silver salmon were caught on #5 Pink Flashtrap Spinners, and the chum salmon was caught on a K-9 Kwikfish.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of 2 silver salmon while casting with #5 Pink Flashtrap Spinners.  I am scheduled to guide again tomorrow and plan to post a fishing report update in the evening.

Friday August 2, 2013

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, who caught 5 silver salmon while fishing with #5 pink Flashtrap Spinners.   One guest caught a limit of 2 fish, and each of the other guests caught 1 silver salmon each.   In addition, we also hooked, but lost a few salmon.   We’ve been finding groups of silver salmon, but only getting a limited number of them to bite.  While boating along the river we saw a yearling moose on a sandbar, and also saw a couple bald eagles fly over.   I am scheduled to guide trips tomorrow and plan to post a report in the evening.

August 3, 2013

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, who caught 2 coho salmon and 1 chum salmon.   All of the fish were caught on #5 pink Flashtrap Spinners.  During the trip we saw some moose along the river, but very few salmon.   We did not lose any salmon that were on the line for a significant amount of time either.

I guided an afternoon group of 5 people, 1 of whom caught a limit of silver salmon, and another who caught one silver salmon.    2 of the silver salmon were caught on #5 silver/black Flashtrap Spinners and 1 salmon was caught on a #5 pink Flashtrap Spinner.  From my point of view there seemed to be a shortage of salmon in the lower river today — especially the further one got down river.   I plan to guide and report again tomorrow.

Sunday August 4, 2013

I guided a morning group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of 2 silver salmon on #5 Flashtrap Spinners.   We saw a cow and calf moose along the river, and saw considerably more salmon surfacing than yesterday.

I guided an afternoon group of 5 guests, 4 of whom caught 2 fish limits of silver salmon, and 1 of whom caught 1 silver salmon.   In addition one member of the group also caught and kept  a chum salmon before keeping his second silver salmon.   All of the fish were caught on #5 Flashtrap Spinners.   Several fish were caught on silver/ black spinners and other were caught on pink spinners.  I plan to guide and report again tomorrow.

August 5, 2013

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on #5 Flashtrap Spinners.  Tomorrow August 6 is the opening day for bait fishing on the Little Susitna River, and we will be fishing at least part of the time with Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers — this is a particularly effective way for catching silver or coho salmon.  Check back tomorrow evening to see how we do.

August 6, 2013 — 1st day of bait on Little Susitna River

I guided a morning group of 4 guests who wanted to fish the entire trip, so they fished with Flashtrap Spinners instead of bait — although two of the guests did use bait to catch one silver salmon each.   Everyone caught a limit of silver salmon and the trip lasted nearly the full 6 hours.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.  The salmon were chowing down the bait — even after heavy fishing pressure in the morning and each member of the group caught their limit of silver salmon in fairly short order.

Deshka River — I’ve heard from two other guides I know that the Deshka River is finally fishing well with large numbers of silver schooled near the mouth.  Both of these guides have been limiting early the past few days.

Susitna Landing — Jeff Boatright told me over last weekend many groups of anglers were catching two fish limits of silver salmon by soaking eggs at or near the landing.

Talkeetna River / Clear Creek — my guests for the past couple days had been recently fishing this area and reported they caught lots of chum salmon and pink salmon and a lesser number of silver salmon near the confluence of these two streams.

The next couple weeks should provide peak silver salmon fishing at several location in the Mat-Su Valley.   Give us a call at 907-746-2199 if you are interested in reservations as we still have space available — beyond what we show on our online reservation system.  I will be guiding again tomorrow.

August 7, 2013

I fished with family and friends in the late morning and we each caught a limit of silver salmon on FIre Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 2 anglers, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.   I will be guiding and reporting again tomorrow.

August 9, 2013

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of coho salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom also caught a limit of coho salmon by  drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.  There was a good number of boats on the river today, but angler success rates seemed to be a bit higher than normal for this year when I enquired at the Alaska State Parks Fee Booth on the way home.  Even with the past couple days of rain the river remained at a relatively low level, so boaters should be extra cautious.

Flashtrap Spinners — Frede delivered an order of 200 Flashtrap Spinners to 3 Rivers Fly & Tackle when the shop opened at 9 a.m., and there was already two people at the shop waiting to purchase some.   For those who may have been looking to purchase specific lures the shop had #4 and #5 Orange Blade, #4 and #5 Pink Blade, #4 and #5 Chartreuse Blade and a small number of #5 Silver/Black today — you may give them a call at (907)-373-5434 or stop by the shop located on near the corner of the Parks Highway and Main Street (Knik – Goose Bay Road) in Wasilla.

August 11, 2013

I guided a group of 4 guests in the morning, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.   In addition the group saw two moose along the river during the trip.

August 12, 2013

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of coho salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom also caught a limit of coho salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.   The water has rise and is a bit muddier following the past 3 days of rain, but fishing remains very good — as it has been for the past week.  With daylight hours getting a bit shorter we are now starting our trips a bit later, and it has not seemed to make any difference in our success rates.

August 13, 2013

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom also caught a limit of silver salmon while drifting FIre Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

Water level is dropping and clearing after out recent rain, but remains at a good fishing level.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom also caught a limit of coho salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.    Water continued to drop and clear, and it was tougher getting bites today.   I plan to guide and report again tomorrow.

August 15, 2013

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom reeled in a limit of 2 coho salmon.   3 guests caught their limit — while I hooked one of the fish (as part of my limit) that my niece reeled in.   My niece managed to catch her first salmon a few minutes earlier in the trip and then wanted to spend the rest of her trip playing with a rubber minnow, but agreed to reel in a salmon if I hooked one.   I hooked up on the first drift.    All of the fish were caught by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

In the afternoon I fished with 2 family members and 2 friends, while not an official charter each of the 4 people caught their limit of coho salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.  I’ll be guiding and reporting again tomorrow.

I guided an afternoon group of 6 guests, each of whom also caught a limit of coho salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.  The river water level has been dropping and the water is getting clearer.  There was an increased level of angling effort on the river today.    I plan to guide and report again tomorrow.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.   I plan to guide and report on trips again tomorrow.

August 19, 2013

I guided a morning group of 5 guests, 3 of whom caught a limit of 2 silver salmon each, and 2 of whom caught 1 silver salmon.   All of the fish were caught by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 6 guests, 2 of whom caught a limit of 2 silver salmon.   All 4 fish were caught by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.   We also briefly tried casting with a #5 Flashtrap Spinner, but had not luck with it.     The number if silver salmon seems to be dropping off, but I would expect to continue seeing some ocean fresh chrome fish for a while longer.

August 20, 2013

I had a day off today, however, Greg Acord guided two trips that I know the results from.

In the morning Greg guided a group of 3 people that caught 4 silver salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

In the afternoon Greg guided a group of 2 guests that each caught a limit of silver salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.   Greg mentioned fishing in many places in order to find the fish that his guests caught in both the morning and afternoon.   I plan to guide and report on trips tomorrow.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.   The water is rising from the recent rain, and fish are holding in new spots along the river because of a different stream flow pattern.

Monday August 26, 2013

I was caribou hunting the past 4 days — so that accounts for the lack of fishing reports on the previous 4 days.   I was successful, so will be cutting up meat today.    My next scheduled guided fishing trips are for tomorrow, so I plan on posting a fishing report update late in the day.

Tuesday August 27, 2013

I guided a group of 2 guests in the morning, each of whom caught a limit of 2 silver salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.  All of the fish we caught today were at least slightly blushed, and some were darker.  Water level is down significantly, but still higher than normal from earlier rains.  I would expect similar conditions in the near future, although the water level may drop a bit more by tomorrow.

Thursday August 29, 2013

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.    Once again most of the fish were getting some color to them, but this time the group did catch a couple fresh chrome silvers.  I am planning to guide and provide a fishing report update again tomorrow.    The water level had been dropping, but after today’s rain I suspect the river will be going up again.
