September 2017 Alaska Fishing Reports

During September we are still targeting silver salmon — mostly on the Little Susitna River.  The earlier part of the month provides better fishing for greater number of silver salmon in the lower river than later in the month.  As the month progresses more of the salmon start to develop a pink or reddish blush and fewer chrome colored ocean-fresh salmon are entering the river.  There is usually less competition this month as many Alaskans change gears and go hunting — nonresident visitors numbers are dropping off during September as well.   This can be a good time to enjoy the river and fish most of the good holes with little completion from other anglers.  Check back here during the month of September for updates on all our September 2017 Alaska fishing charters.

September 1, 2017

I guided a morning group of 3 guests, who caught 5 silver salmon and a whitefish while drifting Fire Cured roe under ESB Bobbers.   During the trip we saw an osprey and a bald eagle.

September 2, 2017

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, who harvested a total  of 7 silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, who once again harvested 7 silver salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.  The guests caught some really nice chrome fish on both trips.

September 3, 2017

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, who harvested 7 nice coho salmon which they caught by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.   We saw a couple flocks of sandhill cranes, and several small groups of ducks.

September 4, 2017

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guest, who harvested 3 chrome silver salmon they caught on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.   During the trip we saw a muskrat swimming along the river and some ducks.

September 5, 2017

I guided and fished with a morning group of 2 guests, and we harvested 3 chrome silver salmon and 1 nice sockeye salmon.   In addition we caught and released some darker fish.   We caught salmon on both Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers and #5 silver / black Flashtrap Spinners.  During the trip we saw an osprey and some bald eagles.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, 3 of whom kept a limit of silver salmon, and 1 of whom kept 1 silver salmon.   The group harvested most of their fish on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers, but also caught several fish on #5 silver/ black Flashtrap Spinners. Once again we released some dark fish before limits were kept.  During the afternoon trip we saw plenty of rain.

September 6 & 7

I’ve been taking it easy for a couple days — attempting to get rid of a lingering cough — doc says I should avoid being out int the cold — so Greg will be finishing up  our trips for the remainder of the season.

Friday September 8, 2017

Greg guided a group of 3 guests for us today, and each of the guests caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB bobbers.   Greg mentioned that many of the older fish seemed to have moved on and the group was primarily hooking fresh fish with sea-lice.     At this point our final guided salmon fishing trip of the season is scheduled for Wednesday September 13.   We still have some guided trip availability on the days between now and Wednesday, we would advise anyone interested in fishing with us to give us a call at (907) 746-2199 before making a reservation.      We are only guiding one trip per day — mostly with a relaxed morning start time.   — Andy

Sunday September 10

Greg guided a morning group of 2 guests, each of whom caught several silver salmon and ended up keeping a limit.   The fish were caught on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB bobbers.

I took my nephew fishing this afternoon and we each caught and kept some silver salmon while fishing on the Susitna River drainage.   Single hook artificial lures were required a this location and time of the season and we caught all of our fish on #5 Silver / Black Flashtrap Spinners.  After we finished we pulled our second guide boat for the season.

Monday September 11, 2017

Greg guided a group of 2 guests each of whom kept a limit of silver salmon in decent shape — the guests also caught and released some additional fish before keeping their limits.   Fish were caught by drifting  Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers and by casting with Flashtrap Spinners.

Tuesday September 12, 2017

Greg guided a group of 3 guest who caught 8 silver salmon, but only kept 5 of them.   All of the fish were caught by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.   Greg keeps saying the fish are getting darker and fewer.   Two of the silvers the group harvested today still had sea-lice.

Wednesday September 13, 2017

Greg guided a group of 4 guests who cast Flashtrap Spinners the entire trip.   The caught about 13 or 14 silver salmon, but only kept 3 salmon.    It seemed like more fish had moved up since yesterday, as they caught fish nearly every place they fished.

Thursday September 14, 2017

Greg guided a group of 2 people who caught at least a dozen silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.  They mainly released the fish and only ended up keeping two of the better salmon.   After the trip Greg pulled our last guide boat for the season.   Thanks to all who fished with us this year.

At this time we are no longer taking reservations for 2017 salmon fishing.

Winter Ice Fishing

I plan on guiding some ice fishing trips again this winter.   Start up time always depends upon ice conditions.   We often get solid ice conditions by late November — but it is a waiting game to see when we can start guiding trips– I am also building  more custom rods this winter for use on our guided fishing trips.
