2006
2006 Alaska fishing reports and forecasts cover Deshka River
and Little Susitna River king salmon and silver salmon fishing trips in Alaska
summer seasons and winter ice fishing in Mat-Su Valley lakes road accessible
from Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla. Our season fishing forecast is posted
first, however, you may skip the forecast by scrolling down, or clicking

2006 Alaska Salmon Fishing Forecasts
King Salmon - Expect Big Deshka River Return
The Deshka River king salmon spawning escapement
has exceeded 30,000 fish each of the past 7 years, and Alaska Department of Fish
and Game (ADF&G) data collected at Deshka River Weir indicates another excellent
run, over 30,000 fish, should return in 2006. Fishermen will be allowed to use
bait starting on May 15, this year, and we expect the Department of Fish and
Game will once again double the daily bag limit for king salmon some time during
the 2006 season. Last year the daily king salmon bag limit doubled, and a
portion of the river opened to 24 hour fishing on May 27, so I am hoping to see
a similar emergency order regulation enacted on or before Memorial Weekend in
2006.
Little Susitna River King Salmon - Expect Consistent Fishing
With high water on the Little Susitna River most of June 2005, many Little Su
fishing guides had to adjust where they fished, in order to help guests catch
king salmon. Once the adjustment was made, however, the river produced good
overall success rates, with some big kings over 50 pounds landed. With less
snow pack in the mountains expect more average water conditions on the Little
Susitna River and good king salmon fishing for king salmon that average about 10
pounds than on the Deshka River.
Silver Salmon Forecast - Expect Better July Fishing
While overall silver salmon spawning escapement numbers were good for both the
Deshka and Little Susitna Rivers last year, there were lower numbers of silvers
returning to many local area streams during the month of July. With lower
forecasted returns of sockeye salmon to Upper Cook Inlet streams this year,
expect ADF&G to cut back on July commercial fishing time and area, thus allowing
greater numbers of all salmon species to return to rivers and streams draining
into the Northern part of Upper Cook Inlet. Silver salmon spawning escapements
to both the Deshka and Little Susitna River were strong 4 years ago, so expect
good numbers of silver salmon in July for 2006, and even more silvers in August
and early September.
Our goal is to post a daily fishing report for each trip we run, but if time
constraints delay us from updating for a few days, you can also visit
previous year's reports to see what happened then. Salmon run timing is
relatively consistent from year to year, so that should give you an idea of what

Little Susitna River -- I guided a group of 4 guests in the morning each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon. The group caught good numbers of silvers on both Flashtrap Spinners and salmon eggs drifted below ESB Bobbers.
I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests each of whom caught and kept a limit of silver salmon on salmon eggs drifted below ESB Bobberrs.
The river level continued to drop today, and both groups were able to catch some silvers out of some of my lower water holes where I had not been able to catch fish for the past couple weeks because of extremely high water. Today`s water level would still be considered high for the lower river, but it has dropped a few feet from what it had been at the peak.
Fishing for both the morning and afternoon groups exceeded my expectations today, with a good mix of chrome and darker silver salmon landed. Neither group caught enough chrome silvers to keep entire limits for everyone of nothing but chrome fish, but we ended up with several exceptionally nice fish on each trip -- inclulding some silvers with sea lice still clinging to them.

Little Susitna River -- I guided a morning group of 4 guests who caught 11 silver salmon and 1 silver salmon jack. 1 silver salmon was caught on a Flashtrap Spinner, 1 sivler salmon was caught on a Mepps Spinner, and the all the rest of the fish were caught on salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers. The water on the lower river may have dropped slightly from what it was yesterday, but it did not drop much and remained quite high. Of the salmon my group caught today only one was a chrome fresh salmon.

Little Susitna River -- Looking at the USGS water chart for the river, the water has been dropping below normal level on the upper river for the past 3 days, so I suspect it has contiued to drop on the lower river as well -- although water leve is likely still above average on the lower river. I had today off from guiding, but will be guiding and fishing on the lower river during the coming week.

Little Susitna River -- I talked with Greg Acord who guided 4 people today. Greg said his group fished all of the best water and caught about 15 silver salmon -- 7 of which they kept. They caught salmon on both salmon eggs and spinners.
I`m scheduled to guide a group tomorrow morning and a single angler in the afternoon, so check back Tuesday evening if you`d like to know how we do.

Little Susitna River -- I guided a group of 2 people in the morning who caught 9 silver salmon, 4 of which they kept. All of the salmon were caught on salmon eggs fished under ESB Bobbers. The water level remains high, but continues to drop. Water is fairly dark colored, and one can not yet see fish in the water very well -- if at all. I`ll be fishing and guiding more this week, so check back for the next report.

Little Susitna River -- I went boating on the river today, but did not fish. While boating along the river I bumped into a log that had been deposited in a new spot by the recent flood waters we had experienced earlier. As the river continues to drop, I would caution boaters to be aware that some of the channels have shifted, and also that there is a significant amount of woody debris deposited in new places along the river, so stay alert. Today the lower river seemed to be running at a much more normal level than it had been for more than 2 weeks now.

Little Susitna River -- I fished with one guest today and we caught 13 silver salmon, my guest kept a limit of 3 nice sivlers and I kept 2 nice silvers. We caught several salmon on both Flashtrap Spinners and salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers. The lower river remains at about king salmon season height which is considerably higher than normal for this time of year, but the water had cleared enough today that I could a few silver salmon in several different shallow stretches along the river.

Little Susitna River -- I guided two guests who caught 14 silver salmon on Flashtrap Spinners and salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers. My two guests kept 3 of the salmon, and released other darker salmon. The river may have been a bit muddier than it was the last time I fished a couple days ago, but we were able to see salmon in the water in a few spots. On the way to the river this morning I also had the treat of seeing a red fox lope across the road in from of my truck.

Little Susitna River -- I guided 2 guests who caught 18 silver salmon, 4 of which they kept. They caught a few salmon on Flashtrap Spinners and most of them on salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers. The water in the lower river remains higher than normal, but continues to drop and clear up. I was able to see salmon in the water in several locations along the river today. My guests caught one silver salmon that still had sea lice clinging to it today, but most of the fish are getting dark as they prepare to spawn, and some of the fish are crimson red.

Little Susitna River -- I guided 2 guests who caught a total of 14 silver salmon on salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers. The bait and bobbers were working well enough that they did not even try casting spinners or any other technique. My guests kept 2 nice shape silver salmon -- one of which still had a sea lice clinging to it, however, the rest of the salmon were quite dark. The salmon fishing is to the point that on any given trip now, I do not know if I could find any nice shape salmon to catch, so I`ve pulled my boat from the river. If a couple people or more wanted to go on a guided fishing trip knowing they may not catch any silver salmon in good shape, and if I was not scheduled to do something else, I likely would be willing to guide a few more trips. Otherwise this may be my last fishing report covering open water salmon fishing for the 2006 season.
