Alaska Fishing Reports 2009

2009 Alaska fishing reports and forecasts cover Deshka River and Little Susitna River king salmon and silver salmon fishing trips in Alaska summer seasons, and winter ice fishing in Mat-Su Valley lakes road accessible from Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla. Our preseason fishing forecasts are posted first, however, you may skip forecasts by scrolling down, or clicking fishing report.

2009 Alaska Salmon Fishing Forecasts

2009 Deshka River King Salmon Forecast
Alaska Department of Fish and Game data collected at Deshka River Weir last summer indicates the 2009 Deshka River king salmon return should be larger than last year’s return. The Department is expecting a return of 20,000 kings (considerably more than the 7,500 kings that swam past the weir in 2008) and the 2009 season may start with the fishery regulated to artificial lures.  We expect the river to be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily in 2009, with a limit of one king salmon per person per day.  For in season Deshka River king salmon regulation updates call the Alaska Department of Fish and Game at (907) 746-6300.

2009 Little Susitna River King Salmon Forecast-- Little Susitna River king salmon fishery forecast data is less reliable than weir data available for the Deshka River, however, expect a 2009 Little Susitna River king salmon fishery similar to what occurred in 2008, but with fish arriving somewhat earlier, since salmon arrived later than normal last season.  Little Susitna River usually has considerably less king salmon than the Deshka, however the average king salmon caught can weigh up to 10 pounds heavier than typical Deshka River king salmon and water conditions on the Little Su at times can be much more favorable for catching salmon.

2009 Silver Salmon Forecast - Expect Good Fishing
Parent year spawning escapements (2005) were strong for coho salmon to both Deshka and Little Susitna River.  Strong returns of silver salmon usually provide good fishing through out the entire season, and that is what we’re expecting for 2009 starting in mid July and running through early September.

My goal is to post a daily fishing report each day I guide a trip, but when time constraints delay me from updating for a few days, you can visit previous year's reports for an idea of what to expect. Salmon run timing is relatively consistent from year to year, so previous year’s fishing reports will provide a rough idea of what to expect. Enjoy our 2009 Alaska fishing reports. -- Andy Couch

Viewing: August 2009

August 01, 2009

I guided a morning group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on #5 Flashtrap Spinners. Pink blades spinnes and silver plated blades produced all of my guests limits, and a limit for me as well.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests who caught 4 silver salmon on Flashtrap spinners. Once again, the spinners which produced for us in the morning caught all the afternoon fish.

August 02, 2009

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests interested in catch and release fishing, so we went upriver and caught and released mostly chum salmon. The guests caught about 10 salmon, with everyone catching at least one fish. 3 silver salmon were caught and the rest were all chum salmon. All of the fish were caught on #3 black Flashtrap Spinners or #4 silver and black Flashtrap spinners. The water was colored up from boat traffic or glacier melt making it difficult to sight fish, although we were able to sight fish in one location. We also saw several large king salmon spawning in shallow riffles and a coyote swimming across the river during our trip.

Our peak August silver salmon season has finally arrived, and prime fishing and CATCHING in the lower river for large fat silvers should continue for most of the month and possibly into September. If you would like to catch silver salmon with us during this time give us a call at 907-746-2199 or fill out and submit our reservation form located on this website and we will contact you about the dates you wish to reserve.

August 04, 2009

I guided 2 people in the morning who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Flashtrap Spinners. #5 Pink Spinners where the hot lure.

I guided and fished with a group of 3 people in the afternoon and we caught 4 silver salmon and lost several other fish that managed to throw the spinners. 2 salmon were caught on #5 pink Flashtrap Spinners and 2 salmon were caught on #4 orange Flashtrap Spinners.

Give us a call at 907-746-2199 for prime August silver salmon fishing -- we currently have both morning and afternoon trip starting times available.

August 05, 2009

I guided a morning group of 3 fishermen who each caught a limit of silver salmon casting with Flashtrap Spinners. #5 pink blade and #5 silver blade were the hot producers. We ran into a huge school of salmon today, and had fish rolling all around us for a while.

August 06, 2009

I guided a morning group of 4 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Borx `O Fire Cured salmon eggs fished under ESB bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon eggs once again fished under ESB Bobbers.

Peak of the season silver salmon fishing is here and if you would like to join us for a fun fishing trip with a great opportunity to catch some large chrome silvers give us a call at 907-746-2199.

August 07, 2009

I guided a group of 4 people in the morning who each limited on silver salmon caught on Fire Cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 6 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon using the same bait and technique as the morning group.

The salmon are in great shape -- fresh from the ocean and full of fight.

August 08, 2009

On the first day of the weekend our great catches of silver salmon continued as each of my 4 morning guests caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers.

In the afternoon I guided a group of 2 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon with the same bait and technique.

We continue to have space available if anyone would like to join us on a fun and easy salmon fishing trip with friendly guides and quality fishing gear. Give us a call at 907-746-2199 to learn more about our trips or availability.

August 09, 2009

I guided a group of 3 guests in the morning, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon eggs under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon eggs drifted under ESB bobbers.

The river water level is dropping and we had to work several spots in order to obtain limits in the morning.

August 10, 2009

I had motor trouble this morning and rather than guide fishing trips I trailered my boat home, removed the motor and installed another one. I also stopped by Greatland Welding where Gary Feaster installed a new jet bearing, then took my boat back out to the river and made a test run upriver. I did not fish at all, but plan to be back out guiding trips on Tuesday.

August 11, 2009

I guided a morning group of 3 people who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon eggs drifted below ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 people who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon eggs drifted below ESB bobbers.

August 12, 2009

I guided a morning group of 4 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon on ESB Bobbers and salmon eggs cured with PaUTZKE`S FIRE CURE. One guest also caught and kept a chum salmon on the same bait.

I guided an afternoon group of 2 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers. Like the morning trip, one guest caught and kept a chum salmon using the same bait and technique.

August 13, 2009

I guided a group of 5 people who limited on silver salmon caught on salmon eggs cured with Pautzke`s Fire Cure or Borx O`Fire. I tried brought both types of cured bait for a comparison, but both seem to work about equally well for getting bites and catching salmon. All of the salmon were caught by drifting the bait under ESB Bobbers.

We currently have space available, so if you would like to join us on a fun silver salmon fishing trip for large Little Susitna RIver silver salmon give us a call at 907-746-2199.

August 14, 2009

I guided a group of 4 people in the morning who caught limits of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon eggs drifted under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests who limited on silver salmon using the same bait and technique as the morning. The water on the river remained low today, but should be coming up overnight or sometime tomorrow from our recent rainy weather.

August 15, 2009

I guided 4 guests who caught limits of silver salmon on Borx O`Fire and Fire Cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers. One guest also caught a nice large chum salmon with the same bait and technique. The river is on the rise and should continue rising tomorrow, but I expect decent fishing conditions with the higher water as the river had been running significantly lower than normal.

We continue to have availability for silver salmon trips and if you would like to join us for a chance to catch some from the ocean silver salmon give us a call at 907-746-2199.

August 16, 2009

I guided a group of 4 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted below ESB Bobbers. The higher water today seemed to move a group of fresh silvers further up the river, and my group caught some large chrome bright fish farther upstream than I had been catching them for the past several days.

We continue to have good availability, so if you would like to join us for a fun silver salmon fishing trip give us a call at (907) 746-2199.

August 18, 2009

I guided 4 people in the morning who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers.

I guided 2 people in the afternoon who caught limits of silver salmon once again fishing the bait and bobbers.

The water came up higher today, but after looking at the USGS water chart I`m thinking it could start dropping a bit by sometime tomorrow.

August 19, 2009

I guided 4 people in the morning who caught 5 silver salmon on Fire Cured and Borx O` Fire cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. The number of bites slowed down for me.

In the afternoon I guided 4 people who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured and Borx O` Fire cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers. My afternoon group did a great job of catching a high percentage of the bites they received. I think the water level on the river dropped a bit during the day -- but the river remains higher than normal.

Give us a call at 907-746-2199 if you would like to fish with us while chrome bright silver salmon are still available.

August 20, 2009

I guided 3 people in the morning who each caught a limit of silver salmon. The guests caught 4 salmon on #4 silver/black Flashtrap Spinners and 2 salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. One of the guests also caught a chum salmon on a Brad`s Wee Wiggler plug.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Borx O`Fire cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. One guest also caught a chum salmon using the salmon bait and technique.

August 21, 2009

In the Morning I guided a group of 4 guests each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon mostly on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. One of the silver salmon was caught on a #5 green Flashtrap Spinner, and one of the guests also caught a chum salmon while drifted bait under a bobber.

In the afternoon I guided a second group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers -- although one of the guests decided to release a small silver and did not catch one to replace it.

August 22, 2009

I guided 3 guests in the morning, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon. One silver salmon was caught by casting with a #5 pink Flashtrap Spinner and all the other salmon were caught drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 5 guests who caught 4 silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers. I fished several miles down river during both trips and all of fish were in good or excellent shape.

I`ll be fishing two trips again on Sunday, August 23, but next week we have good charter availability, so give us a call at 907-746-2199 if you`d like to join us for a fun fishing charter for chrome late summer silver salmon.

The river water level is dropping back close to normal, and I expect fishing pressure to once again drop off significantly after the weekend is over.

August 23, 2009

I guided 4 people in the morning each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon. One salmon was caught on a #5 silver Flashtrap Spinner and the rest of the fish were caught by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I guided 3 people in the afternoon and each person caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

August 24, 2009

I guided a group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon fishing salmon roe cured with Pautzke`s Fire Cure. All the fish were caught by drifting the bait under ESB Bobbers. Even with the recent rain the past few days the river has remained at a lower water level.

Give us a call at 907-746-2199 to learn our a availability for the next week or so.

August 25, 2009

I guided 4 people who each caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers. By working the lower river we managed to catch some large chrome fish -- although it may take longer to catch them than if we had boated upriver.

Water level dropped today and should stay the same or evendrop a little further tomorrow.

Give us a call at 907-746-2199 to learn about or current availability.

August 26, 2009

I guided 4 guests who each caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. Ocean fresh chrome silver salmon are still available, however, some of the fish we are boating have a rosy blush as well. Despite recent rain showers, the river water level has dropped nearly back to normal for this time of year -- which is quite low.

I`ll be guiding another group tomorrow morning, but we have availability on most dates as well, so give us a call at 907-746-2199 if you would like to join us on a late season silver salmon trip.

August 27, 2009

I guided a group of 4 people, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on salmon roe cured with Pautzke`s Fire Cure and drifted under ESB Bobbers. The group caught several large fish today including a chrome 12 pounder with sea lice still clinging to him.

I`ll be guiding another group tomorrow.

August 28, 2009

I guided 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon. 5 silver salmon were caught on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers and the rest were caught on #4 orange Flashtrap Spinners. Everyday I seem to be moving around to multiple holes in order to find enough salmon that will bite. WIth little fishing pressure from other anglers, we`ve been able to fish most of the prime holes on a daily basis.

Starting Monday August 31 we currently have charter space available for the entire coming week. Give us a call at 907-746-2199 to reserve your fishing trip with us.

August 29, 2009

I guided a group 4 people, who caught and kept 6 silver salmon, but also caught and released a few silver salmon that did not measure up to "Keeper" standards. Most of the salmon were caught on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers, and the rest were caught on #4 Flashtrap Spinners. Water level looks like it will remain about the same in the next few days.

August 30, 2009

I guided 3 people who caught 5 silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers and #4 orange Flashtrap Spinners.
