Alaska Fishing Reports 2009

2009 Alaska fishing reports and forecasts cover Deshka River and Little Susitna River king salmon and silver salmon fishing trips in Alaska summer seasons, and winter ice fishing in Mat-Su Valley lakes road accessible from Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla. Our preseason fishing forecasts are posted first, however, you may skip forecasts by scrolling down, or clicking fishing report.

2009 Alaska Salmon Fishing Forecasts

2009 Deshka River King Salmon Forecast
Alaska Department of Fish and Game data collected at Deshka River Weir last summer indicates the 2009 Deshka River king salmon return should be larger than last year’s return. The Department is expecting a return of 20,000 kings (considerably more than the 7,500 kings that swam past the weir in 2008) and the 2009 season may start with the fishery regulated to artificial lures.  We expect the river to be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily in 2009, with a limit of one king salmon per person per day.  For in season Deshka River king salmon regulation updates call the Alaska Department of Fish and Game at (907) 746-6300.

2009 Little Susitna River King Salmon Forecast-- Little Susitna River king salmon fishery forecast data is less reliable than weir data available for the Deshka River, however, expect a 2009 Little Susitna River king salmon fishery similar to what occurred in 2008, but with fish arriving somewhat earlier, since salmon arrived later than normal last season.  Little Susitna River usually has considerably less king salmon than the Deshka, however the average king salmon caught can weigh up to 10 pounds heavier than typical Deshka River king salmon and water conditions on the Little Su at times can be much more favorable for catching salmon.

2009 Silver Salmon Forecast - Expect Good Fishing
Parent year spawning escapements (2005) were strong for coho salmon to both Deshka and Little Susitna River.  Strong returns of silver salmon usually provide good fishing through out the entire season, and that is what we’re expecting for 2009 starting in mid July and running through early September.

My goal is to post a daily fishing report each day I guide a trip, but when time constraints delay me from updating for a few days, you can visit previous year's reports for an idea of what to expect. Salmon run timing is relatively consistent from year to year, so previous year’s fishing reports will provide a rough idea of what to expect. Enjoy our 2009 Alaska fishing reports. -- Andy Couch

Viewing: September 2009

September 01, 2009

I went hunting with Greg Acord out along the Little Susitna River yesterday, but we also were looking for fresh silver salmon in the lower river. I saw a couple salmon roll within a mile or two of the landing, but nothing down in the zone where my guided groups have been catching most of their chrome silver salmon.

On my last charter on August 30, the group caught 5 silver salmon, and one of them was a really nice chrome fish of about 9 pounds, while there were two additional chrome silvers they were quite small. In addition the group had caught a couple darker silver salmon as well. The group ended up keeping only one silver salmon.

I`m definitely thinking about wrapping up my open water salmon fishing for the season before long.

September 02, 2009

Greg Acord and I hunted downstream of the Little Susitna River Public Use Facility again today, and also spent time fishing one of the best producing holes for me in the lower river. We did not see or hook any silver salmon. After spending the morning on the lower river Greg took his family on a short salmon fishing trip upstream from the landing. They fished places where they could see silver salmon milling in the clear water, but most of the salmon are getting dark and not responding well to lures. One of Greg`s daughters hooked a salmon, but the whole group did not land any fish.

While there are older salmon available only a short distance upstream from the Little Susitna River Public Use Facility boat launch, most of those fish are reluctant to strike both lures and bait, in addition most of those fish are maturing toward the spawning process to the point where I would not recommend keeping them to eat, and finally, while Little Susitna River has had catchable numbers of silver salmon since early August, as noted in these fishing reports, it is my belief that the silver salmon run may be smaller than average this year. For all of these reasons I prefer not to guide primarily catch and release silver salmon fishing trips for dark salmon preparing to spawn. I would prefer to see these fish spawn with the greatest possible success. So, after guiding one or two additional trips which people called to reserved earlier -- I will be done guiding open water salmon fishing trips on the Little Susitna River for the 2009 season.

I plan to continue posting updates on our 2009 fishing reports -- however expect less frequent reporting now that our guided open water salmon fishing is almost over.
