Alaska Fishing Reports 2010

2010 Alaska fishing reports and forecasts cover Deshka River and Little Susitna River king salmon and silver salmon fishing trips in Alaska summer seasons, and winter ice fishing in Mat-Su Valley lakes road accessible from Anchorage, Palmer, and Wasilla. Our preseason fishing forecasts are posted first, however, you may skip forecasts by scrolling down, or clicking fishing report.

2010 Alaska Salmon Fishing Forecasts

2010 Deshka River King Salmon Forecast
The Alaska Department of Fish and Game has high expectations for the Deshka River king salmon fishery in 2010. Data collected at the Department’s Deshka River weir last summer indicates there could be 10,000 additional king salmon returning to the Deshka in 2010 as compared to last year! Expect the Deshka River king salmon fishery to be open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily in 2010, with bait allowed starting on May 15 and a limit of one king salmon per person per day. For in season Deshka River king salmon regulation updates call the Alaska Department of Fish and Game at (907) 746-6300.

2010 Little Susitna River King Salmon Forecast
Expect higher catch rates on the Little Susitna River for 2010, based mostly on the fact that Deshka River should be open for king salmon fishing for the entire season in 2010. Having both the Little Susitna and Deshka River king salmon fisheries open for the entire year gives anglers much more area to fish as well as expanding the number of king salmon available for harvest.

2010 Silver Salmon Forecast
The best silver salmon fishing last year occurred through the entire month of August. If commercial fishing effort in July remains high in 2010, I would expect the best silver salmon fishing to once again occur in August. With less commercial fishing effort in early or mid-July, we could once again see the good July fishing we've seen in the past.

My goal is to post a daily fishing report each day I guide a trip, but when time constraints delay me from updating for a few days, you can visit previous year's reports for an idea of what to expect. Salmon run timing is relatively consistent from year to year, so previous year’s fishing reports will provide a rough idea of what to expect. Enjoy our 2010 Alaska fishing reports. -- Andy Couch

Viewing: August 2010

August 01, 2010

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, 3 of whom caught limits of silver salmon and one of whom caught 2 silver salmon while fishing with Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers. We worked lots of different holes for the fish the guests caught, and scratched away to get as many fish as they did. 3 of the silvers were quite small, and one was quite large for a Deshka River fish.

I guided an afternoon group of 2 guests, one of whom caught a silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under an ESB Bobber. We saw salmon rolling in several places we were fishing, but could not manage to get many bites in the afternoon. There was plenty of boat traffic on the river in the afternoon, but I would expect to see much less pressure during the week.

August 02, 2010

I guided 3 guests on an afternoon trip. 2 guests caught a limit of silver salmon, and the remaining kid caught a silver salmon, and hooked but lost a few other salmon as well. In addition, I hooked a silver which I let him land. We fished the whole trip, but came back with a box of nice large fish. The guests also caught a few pink salmon. 2 of the fish were caught on K13X Kwikfish, and the others were caught on #5 Flashtrap Spinners.

August 03, 2010

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, 2 of whom caught 3 silver salmon limits, and 2 of whom each caught 1 silver salmon. In addition two rainbow trout were caught. All of the fish were caught on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests, one of whom caught 1 silver salmon on FIre Cured salmon roe drifted under an ESB Bobber.

August 04, 2010

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon while casting with Flashtrap Spinners. Silver blade and pink blade were the two patterns we fished. In addition two of the guests also caught and released pink salmon before harvesting their last silver salmon.

The first 200 Flashtrap Spinners I delivered to 3 Rivers Fly & Tackle sold out in less than 4 days, so I delivered another 200 today. Don`t know how long they will last this time, but for people interested, there is a fairly good selection right now.

August 05, 2010

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, 3 of whom limited on silver salmon by casting with #5 Flashtrap Spinners. The 4th guests hooked a few fish on spinners and also back trolling with K-13X Kwikfish, but did not land any salmon.

I guided an afternoon group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on K-13X or K11X Kwikfish. The group also caught 2 chum salmon and a pink salmon on the same lures.

Tomorrow is the opening day of bait fishing on the Little Susitna River, and I will be fishing salmon eggs under ESB Bobbers -- check back in the evening for an update.

August 06, 2010

I guided a morning group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting salmon roe cured with Pautzke`s Fire Cure under ESB Bobbers.

I took a second group of 4 friends who each caught a limit of silver salmon using the same bait and technique.

I guided a final group of 4 guests, who each caught a limit of silver salmon, once again with same bait and bobbers.

FIshing was very good up and down the river today, and while it may take longer tomorrow, I expect the same type of fishing.

August 07, 2010

I guided 5 guests in the morning, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESb Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, each of whom limited on silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers.

August 08, 2010

I guided a group of 5 anglers in the morning, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

August 09, 2010

I guided a morning group of 4 people, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

I guided a second group of 4 people, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

August 10, 2010

I guided a group of 4 guests in the morning, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

In the afternoon I guided a second group of 4 guests, and once again each of them caught a limit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon rode fished under ESB Bobbers.

August 11, 2010

I guided a morning group of 2 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon while drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers. Morning fishing pressure on the Little Susitna River dropped to it`s lowest level since the fishery opened to bait on August 6th. It was a very quiet and pleasant morning of fishing, and I expect lower fishing pressure to continue as people get involved with many other late summer activities. We currently have good charter availability for the next week, so give us a call at 907-746-2199 if you would like to join us for a fun silver salmon catching trip.

August 12, 2010

I did not fish, however, Greg Acord guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon while fishing Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I`ll be on the river again Friday.

August 13, 2010

I guided a group of 4 people in the morning, each of whom cuaght a limit of silver salmon. 3 people caught their fish by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers and 1 person caught his silvers by casting #5 Chartreuse and a #4 Silver and Black Flashtrap Spinners.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 people, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

3 Rivers Fly and Tackle had once again sold through all of their Flashtrap Spinners, so I dropped off another 100 spinners with #5 Chartreuse, #5 Orange, and #4 Orange, like last time, I don`t know how long they will last.

August 14, 2010

I guided a morning group of 2 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon while casting with Flashtrap Spinners.

I fished with my mother and her husband in between charters, and each of us caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

I guided an afternoon group of 4 guests, and 3 guests caught their limit of silver salmon, while 1 guest caught a single sivle salmon. 4 silver salmon were caught on Flashtrap Spinners and 3 silver salmon were caught by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

August 15, 2010

I guided a group of 4 guests to Susitna River tributaries, and one guest caught one silver salmon salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe fished behind a Jet Diver. We saw a few fish, but simply could not draw many bites. For that matter, we did not see that many fish either. The fishing was relatively uncrowded at least, and we saw a moose and calf in the morning that walked out less than a stone`s throw away from us.

I`ll be guiding a morning trip tomorrow, and expect to do considerably better.

August 16, 2010

I guided a morning group of 4 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

We also saw a river otter feeding on a salmon carcass during the trip, and that is something we don`t see very often.

Check back tomorrow to see how we do then.

August 17, 2010

I guided 4 people, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

Greg Acord guided 2 people in the afternoon, each of whom also caught a limit of silver salmon by drifting salmon roe under bobbers.

We`ve been fishing longer and more spots to catch the fish, but some fresh silver salmoncontinue to arrive on a daily basis.

August 18, 2010

I guided a group of 3 anglers, each of whom caught a liit of silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted beleow ESB Bobbers.

August 19, 2010

I guided a group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of sivler salmon. ON e salmon was caught on a #5 silver Flashtrap Spinner and all the other salmon were caught on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted below ESB Bobbers.

August 20, 2010

I guided a group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon. One fish was caught on a Flashtrap Spinner and the other fish were caught drifting Fire Cured salmon roe under ESB Bobbers.

August 21, 2010

I was doing other things today, and did not guide or fish.

Greg Acord guided a group of two people, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon on Flashtrap Spinners.

August 22, 2010

I took my mother and her husband fishing this morning, and each of us caught a limit of silver salmon. Wendy and Fred each caught their limits on Fire Cured salmon roe fished under ESB Bobbers, while I caught one of my two silvers on the same set up, and one while casting with a silver bladed Flashtrap Spinner. The water level has dropped significantly along the river to where it would best be described as LOW.

August 23, 2010

I guided a group of 3 guests, each of whom caught a limit of silver salmon. My guests caught 4 silvers on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers and 2 silver salmon on #5 Flashtrap Spinners. The number of silver salmon entering the river continues to slow down and today we scratched up one salmon at a time from some of the prime holes we fished, while other good spots did not even produce a bite.

Greg Acord and Russ Cole also guided trips on Little Susitna River today, and their guests caught some silver salmon, but did not limit out. When I talked to them briefly today, it sounded like all of their silvers were caught on lures.

There are still some chrome sea - lice carrying fish entering the river, however, even in the river`s tidal zone, a considerable portion of the few remaining silvers are maturing toward spawning with large well developed eggs and a rosy blush of color.

I expect the season to continue along the same way. With less new fish as the season progresses and a higher percentage of mature lower eating quality fish. All trips at this time are scratchy in terms of how many fish we might catch on any given trip -- on the plus side there are very few other anglers on the river and we get to fish most of our better holes on a daily basis.

Russ Colee will be concluding his salmon guiding season on Wednesday August 25, while Greg Acord and I will continue guiding some additional trips. Both Greg and I suggest fishing morning trips for the best chance of catching silver salmon, and I am presently guiding morning trips, only, as I am coaching a volleyball team each weekday afternoon.

August 24, 2010

I fished with one guests, and each of us caught one silver salmon on Flashtrap Spinners. We got a late start on a beautiful sunny day, and the salmon were biting at the start of the trip, but as the sun got higher in the sky the salmon became increasingly reluctant to bite. We also fished with Fire Cured roe under ESB Bobbers and my guest has several bites (once again primarily early in the trip -- but only managed to land one pink salmon on the bait). One of the highlights of the trip was seeing a black bear looking for fish along the bank as we drifted quite close with the boat.

Russ Colee`s group had a couple fish when I saw him fairly early in his trip, and ended up catching an additional two silver salmon, so they ended up with 4 silvers. The fish were caught on both spinners and Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers.

Greg Acord gudied a trip with a 10 a.m. start time and his group only managed to catch one silver salmon, before the silvers refused to cooperate the rest of the trip.

August 25, 2010

Russ Colee guided our only trip today, and his group of 2 anglers caught one silver salmon on Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under an ESB Bobber. This was an afternoon trip run on a bright sunny day, and Russ said they had a couple additional opportunities they did not manage to catch.

Greg Acord is scheduled to guide a morning trip tomorrow, and I`ll post results from that trip after I get them.

August 26, 2010

Greg Acord guided a group of 2 anglers who limited on silver salmon while casting Flashtrap Spinners. The group fished on several schools of fish in order to catch them, and were able to find several biters they were not able to land as well.

August 27, 2010

I guided a group of 4 guests, one of whom caught two silver salmon on a Vibrax Spinner. The remaining members of the group tried a variety of Flashtrap Spinners and Fire Cured salmon roe drifted under ESB Bobbers, but bites were extremely few and far between. We fished over several schools of silver salmon and tried numerous holes along the river searching for bites.

Greg Acord guided a group of 2 guests who caught 3 silver salmon while casting with Flashtrap Spinners. Greg said they fished over several groups of fish with no luck, and then found one small school they had passed up earlier and they caught all 3 salmon in a manner of minutes near the end of their trip.

Greg is guiding a group for us on Saturday morning, and I`ll post a report from that trip after I find out the results.

Numbers of silver salmon continue to drop off, and at this time we are planning to stop guiding Little Susitna River salmon fishing trips on or before Labor Day Weekend.

August 28, 2010

Greg Acord guided a group of 4 people, who caught a total of 5 silver salmon on Flashtrap Spinners. Greg said his group caught 3 of their salmon in one of the last spots they fished, and that there were only a small number of other anglers out on the river.
