Pictures of sockeye salmon with photos of
Alaska king, silver and chum salmon fishing in Alaska. Nicknamed, red salmon,
sockeyes are prized for explosive jumping abilities and tasty red flesh.
Sockeye salmon or red salmon return in two runs
to Little Susitna River. The early run arrives in late May and June, and
fishermen catch a few sockeye on king salmon charters while fishing large
king salmon lures. Better sockeye fishing occurs during the late run with
peak fishing the last 10 days of July.
This late run red salmon or sockeye salmon was
caught on a #3 black Flashtrap Spinner from Little Susitna River near
Wasilla, Alaska in July. Little Su red salmon average 5 - 6 lbs. and are
extremely strong fighters, usually jumping several times when hooked.
Catching sockeye salmon starts with seducing
them to strike a fly, lure, or bait. This July sockeye suckered for salmon
eggs drifted along the river bottom.
Fly fishing for sockeye salmon proves successful
with a yarn fly, casting reel, and drift rod.
Male and Female sockeye salmon pair caught
during first week of June. The female sockeye has a more rounded body and
snout, while the male is already developing a higher backed shape and hooked
nose.
